The Clevatess Manga – The King of Devil Beasts, The Baby and the Brave of Undead

The Clevatess Manga – The King of Devil Beasts, The Baby and the Brave of Undead

The Clevatess The King of Devil Beasts, The Baby and the Brave of Undead is a full-color seinen manga by Yūji Iwahara – the same artist behind King of Thorn and Dimension W – and it reads like nothing else currently running. The series has been on LINE Manga since August 2020, got its anime adaptation from Lay-duce in Summer 2025, and already has a second season locked in for July 2026. Yen Press picked up the English license in early 2026, with the first volume hitting shelves in August.

The world of Edthea is ringed by dangerous wilderness, home to powerful creatures called Devil Beasts ruled by four Beast Kings – and humans have been quietly warned to stay out.  The story opens when a king ignores that warning, sends thirteen of his best heroes to kill the southern Beast King Clevatess, and gets every single one of them wiped out in minutes. Clevatess then levels the capital in retaliation.
While surveying the ruins, he stumbles upon a royal infant – Luna – and ends up taking the baby in. He also resurrects one of the slain heroes, Alicia Glenfall, binding her to his service so she can help raise the child while he tries to actually understand what humanity is.

That setup sounds like a comedy, and parts of it are. But Iwahara doesn’t let it stay comfortable. The series digs into themes of mortality, duty, and moral ambiguity in ways that genuinely surprise you. Clevatess isn’t redeemed or softened – he’s terrifying, and the manga doesn’t pretend otherwise. The “found family” dynamic works because none of it comes easy.

Iwahara is known in Europe for his distinctive style using bold ink art and layered painting techniques, and Clevatess shows all of that off. The full-color webtoon format gives him room to do things that black-and-white manga can’t – moody lighting, fur texture, scale. The Beast Kings in particular look genuinely massive and alien.

If Made in Abyss or Fullmetal Alchemist are in your rotation and you want something that mixes real danger with unexpected warmth, this one earns its place. The anime is also a good starting point – but the manga has details and pacing the adaptation trims down.

Boelate Empire
Northeast
Largest and most militaristic nation. Expansionist by nature; seized the opportunity to invade weakened Hyden after Clevatess’s attack.

Rare mineral weapons that can cut through anything — the only arms capable of harming a Dark Beast. Produced exclusively by the Kingdom of Hyden’s royal forge.
Dark Ichor
Magical blood that flows through Clevatess’s veins. Used to resurrect the dead, binding them as immortal servants permanently loyal to the Beast Lord who revived them.
Books of Toa
Prophetic tomes dictating hero selection, governance, and fate. A mix of ritual, relic, and curse — often manipulating those who read them.
Magic Stones
Artifacts that allow humanoids to use magic. Considered proof of racial inferiority by Vordein — “true humans” required no such stones to wield power.
The Void Borders
Pitch-black territory on all maps of Edthea. Nobody who crossed these borders ever returned. Not even the Beast Lords venture beyond.
